  Thank you to everyone who donated bags of unwanted textiles for our Cash for Clobber Collection today ... raising another £60! Fantastic!

  And don't worry if you missed it, please hang on to any unwanted used clothes and textiles for a few weeks.Our next collection is Wednesday 18th October.

  Finally thanks to Primary 6 for loading the lorry.

  Class Teachers will meet with parents of children from P2-P7 on Thursday 21st September to outline the academic year 2016/2017 for each class. The timetable for these meetings is as follows: The timetable for these meetings is as follows:

  Please note. It will not be possible to discuss individual children’s progress at these meetings. Individual parent/teacher meetings will be arranged later in the school year. However, as is the usual policy in the school, should you wish to make an appointment at any time to discuss your child’s progress with his/her class teacher please contact the school office between 9.00am and 12.00 noon to make an appointment.

   

  All children will be released from school at 1.50pm on this date, Thursday 21^st September, to accommodate these meetings.

• ST. COLUM'S PTA AGM

  The PTA will be holding its AGM on Wednesday 4th October at 7pm. At this meeting we will run through the highlights of the previous year, review the finances and discuss plans for the upcoming year. The meeting itself should take no longer than 30 minutes.

   

  We will be losing several PTA members this year. A big thanks to them for their efforts over the last few years. Although the shoes will be hard to fill, we need new volunteers to step forward, so please consider helping out. It's not a huge commitment and can be quite fun and rewarding. We raised over £6000 last year and with your help, we hope to raise even more this year.

   

  There will be teas and coffees, so it'll be a good way to meet new parents in a relaxed environment.

• CHOIR RESTARTS TUESDAY 12th SEPTEMBER

• HELP US RECYCLE AND RAISE FUNDS FOR OUR SCHOOL!

  Help us recycle and raise funds for our school!

   

   

  We are taking part in the Cash for Clobber scheme as part of our ongoing work for the Eco-Schools Programme. The scheme is aimed at raising awareness of textile recycling among children and to show how essential it is for everyone in the ‘developed world’ to reduce, reuse and recycle and is also a great way of raising funds for our school. Schools which collect the most textiles per pupil are in with a chance to win the annual ‘Cash for Clobber’ competition with fantastic prizes of up to £2,000.

   

  Last year unwanted textile donations raised £480 for our school. Fantastic effort everyone! Our Eco-School Committee used the money raised to purchase new P.E. and sports equipment from our Wish List which benefits all the pupils in our school.

   

  On Wednesday 13th September, we are having our next bag drop collection. Bags of clean, unwanted textiles may be left in the school assembly hall for collection by Cookstown Textile Recyclers, one of the Eco-school program partners, who will sort and recycle. Low grade material is used for industrial wipers and fillings, good quality clothes are re-used in the developing world.

   

  Why not have a post-summer clear out of old and unwanted items? Perhaps you could encourage family and friends to donate their unwanted textiles too?

   

  What can you put in the bag??

  • All types of clothing (even with holes!)

  • Bags and shoes (please tie shoes together with laces)

  • Hats and belts

  • Towels and curtains

  • Bed linen (sheets, pillow cases, duvet covers)

   

  Remember NO QUILTS OR PILLOWS and all items must be clean.

• DOMINICAN COLLEGE ENTRANCE ASSESSMENT INFORMATION MORNING

  Dominican College Entrance Assessment Information Morning

   

  Parents of P7 pupils interested in transferring to Dominican College in the 2018-19 school year are warmly invited to the school on Saturday 9^th September at 9.00 am for a familiarisation meeting.

   

  Ms Ronan, Dominican Principal, will outline arrangements for the entrance assessment and the admissions criteria for Year 8. Registration packs will be available for pupils yet to register. The meeting should last no more than an hour.

   

  Pupils will be able to visit some classrooms and help familiarise themselves with the school.

   

  Parents are reminded that the deadline for registration for the entrance assessment is Friday September 22^nd.

• SUSTRANS ACTIVE SCHOOL TRAVEL PROGRAMME

  We have exciting news to share – our school has been chosen to be part of the Sustrans Active School Travel Programme, starting this term! We are teaming up with the country’s leading sustainable transport charity, Sustrans, to encourage more journeys to school by foot or wheels. Active travel, such as cycling, walking and scooting to and from school, has a range of benefits including:

  • improving health through physical activity
  • promoting independence
  • improving safety awareness
  • benefiting the environment
  • reducing the number of cars around the school gates, making our school safer for everyone

   

  Sustrans is one of our Eco-School Programme partners and the Active School Programme supports the topics of Transport, Healthy Living and Climate Change as we continue our work towards our second Eco-Schools Green Flag.

   

  We will be working closely with Johnny McCrystal, our Sustrans Active Travel Officer, who will help us promote active travel throughout the year:

  • organising activities and events to encourage pupils to cycle, scoot and walk to school;
  • offering cycling training to help pupils ride safely and feel more confident on their bikes;
  • working to get better facilities, including bike and scooter parking;
  • working with parents and carers so that they can help support the programme.

   

  We understand cycling or walking to school is not easy for every family, and there will be opportunities for all children to participate in some activities/the programme.

   

  We look forward to seeing more children and parents/carers cycling, walking and scooting to school this year!
