  • WORLD BOOK DAY CELEBRATIONS, FRIDAY 6TH MARCH

    Fri 14 Feb 2020

    We are celebrating World Book Day on Friday 6th March 2020. As part of our celebrations, we would love the children to dress up as one of their favourite characters from a book. Each class will take part in a range of activities throughout the day linked to World Book Day. There will also be a whole school assembly and a parade which will give pupils the opportunity to show off their costumes. There will be a number of prizes on the day for the best costume in each class. Once again, we have decided to partner up with our Eco Committee to run an extra competition. Mrs Mulholland and Mrs Molloy are offering a special prize for the best costume made using reusable materials.

    ‘SHARE A STORY’
    This year we are inviting parents, grandparents or relatives to come into school to read their favourite story to a class of their choice. If you or a relative are free on Friday 6th March, we would LOVE to have you in our classrooms. All you need to do is pick your favourite book or novel and be brave enough to read it or a short extract to your chosen class. This is an opportunity NOT to be missed!!

    ‘POTATO CHARACTERS’
    This year, we would like pupils to decorate a potato as their favourite book character. Be as creative and imaginative as you can. There will be prizes for the best potato character in each class and a few spot prizes as well. We will display all the entries from each class at the front of the school. Get your thinking caps on and have fun! We can’t wait to see what characters you come up with!

    We’re looking forward to having a wonderful celebration on the 6th March.

  • WEAVE AGAINST PLASTIC

    Thu 13 Feb 2020

    Last year our pupils were involved in creating an eco-brick as part of our Portstewart Strand single use Plastic Free campaign last summer. The National Trust were delighted with the sculptures that were created and are now extending this campaign further into the wider community by running several events.

    The first being;
    Community Litter Pick on Portstewart Strand on Sat 29th February as our contribution to our big Leap for Nature. All families are welcome to attend. The event will run from 10am – 12 noon, meeting just in front of Harrys Shack.

    They have also secured funding to allow 20 adults to work with the local artist Louise McClean from Atlantic Weavers. Louise will lead a series of workshops over 4 weeks teaching the traditional skill of basket weaving. Each participant will have the chance to, learn this skill and create their own basket by the end of the sessions.
    The baskets will be made by weaving natural materials together and selected materials found on the Strand from litter picks making a bold statement in their design. These baskets will then be stationed at the beach and will be available to anyone wanting to collect litter, taking away the need to use any plastic bags.

    If you would like to be involved in creating the baskets, you will have to be available on the following dates; 2, 9, 16 & 23 March from 7.00 – 9.00 pm at Flowerfield Arts Centre.

    Spaces are limited, so please book your place by following the link below:

    Finally,  use these new baskets in another Community Beach Clean. Again, as many families who wish to attend will be made most welcome.

    This will run on;
    Thursday 9th April, Community Litter Pick on Portstewart Strand.  The event will run from 10:30am – 12:30pm, meeting just in front of Harrys Shack.
