  • ROALD DAHL DAY

    Wed 05 Sep 2018

Roald Dahl Day is next Thursday 13th September 2018 and we are hoping to celebrate it with a bang! Each class will take part in a range of literacy activities throughout the day linked to Roald Dahl’s novel, ‘The Twits.’ Pupils from Primary 3 to Primary 7, along with thousands of school children from around the world will also watch ‘The Roald Dahl Day Show’. We will find out which famous authors were inspired by Roald Dahl and we might even get the opportunity to see what is inside the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre. The Show will finish with a fun ‘draw along’ section which will suit a lot of our budding young illustrators!

    ‘BEARD PARADE’

As part of our celebrations, we are inviting the children to participate in a fun competition. We would love the children to create their own version of Mr Twit’s smelly, disgusting beard! There will be a whole school assembly in the afternoon which will give all pupils the opportunity to show off their creations during the ‘Beard Parade!’ There will be a number of prizes on the day for the best beards.

We’re looking forward to having a wonderful celebration next week!

  • ST. COLUM'S PTA AGM

    Wed 29 Aug 2018

The PTA will be holding its AGM on Tuesday 18th September at 7pm. At this meeting they will run through the highlights of the previous year, review the finances and discuss plans for the upcoming year. The meeting itself should take no longer than 30 minutes.

They are be losing several PTA members this year. A big thanks to them for their efforts over the last few years. Although the shoes will be hard to fill, new volunteers are needed, so please consider helping out. It's not a huge commitment and is great fun and very rewarding.

There will be teas and coffees, so it'll be a good way to meet new parents in a relaxed environment. Please use the link below to reply so we can gauge how many pots of tea to put on!

Many thanks for your support. We look forward to seeing you there!

  • AIR MONITORING RESULTS

    Sat 07 Jul 2018

Remember our Air Monitoring Tubes we put up earlier this year? We're delighted that our air monitoring results have returned from the lab.

Our first for the tube put up in the field at the back of the school is 5.9 µg/m3 (micrograms per cubic metre).

Our second result for the tube put up at the front gate is 8.7 µg/m3.

Our results will soon be up on the UK-wide AIR POLLUTION MAP ( https://friendsoftheearth.uk/clean-air/clean-air-campaign-air-monitoring-kit-results)

    What do our results mean?
The European Union has set the legal limit for NO2 pollution at an annual mean (average) of 40µg/m3.
Which means that during the time our monitoring tubes were up, NO2 pollution levels were below the level at which the annual legal limit is set.

    The techy bit...

These are a snapshot of the air pollution for the places and times we were monitoring.

Lots of things affect pollution levels over the course of a year, such as variations in the weather. This means that annual average results for the places we monitored could look very different from our snapshot results.

Air pollution levels also vary greatly depending on how close you put your tube to where the pollution comes from. So there’ll be a reduction in levels even a few metres away from the source.

We do know that most areas of the UK are currently failing to meet legal limits set by the EU. And that short-term and long-term exposure to NO2 – even at levels below these legal limits – can have significant negative health effects.
